Features
Everything in Raw Smith.
A RAW library and editor for iPhone, iPad and Mac, built on Apple's RAW engine. Here's every part of it, and what's deliberately left out.
RAW and decoding
Raw Smith opens what Apple's RAW engine opens: 860+ cameras today, plus every DNG and Apple ProRAW. There is no list of file extensions inside the app; a file is supported when Apple's decoder reads it. When it can't, Raw Smith tells you which camera Apple doesn't support yet.
| Rendering | Every edit renders from the RAW. A fast linear preview follows the slider, then the full RAW decode replaces it at screen size about half a second after you stop. |
|---|---|
| Decoder version | Each photo is pinned to the version of Apple's decoder it was imported with, so an OS update never changes an existing edit. New photos get the newest. |
| Enhanced (RAW 9) | Apple's new machine-learning RAW decoder on supported cameras (iOS/macOS 27), as an Enhanced switch in Detail, with its one-time model download shown as progress. |
| ProRAW | Opens as DNG, with local tone mapping and the iPhone's own sky matte available to masks. |
| Also opens | JPEG, HEIC and TIFF. RAW+JPEG pairs import as one photo with the RAW as the original. |
| Colour | A linear wide-gamut working space; Display P3 on screen; sRGB, Display P3 or Adobe RGB on export. |
Profiles and white balance
A profile is where a photo starts: Standard (a camera-neutral rendering that tracks Apple's own closely), Neutral (flat, for grading), Vivid, Monochrome and Apple. The same profile runs on the preview and the full decode, so they agree.
White balance: As Shot, Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash, or Custom Kelvin and tint on the RAW's own scale, plus an eyedropper. Pasted to other photos, a white balance is resolved again on each RAW.
Light and tone curve
Light: Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks, plus Auto. Tone curve: a parametric curve by region (Highlights, Lights, Darks, Shadows) with three movable splits, and point curves for luminance and each of red, green and blue.

Color, Point Color and grading
Vibrance and Saturation; an 8-band Color Mixer (hue, saturation and luminance for red, orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, purple and magenta); Point Color to pick one colour from the photo and shift just that colour and its neighbours; and 3-way colour grading with Shadows, Midtones, Highlights and Global wheels, luminance for each, Blending and Balance.

Effects, detail and optics
| Effects | Texture (fine detail), Clarity, Dehaze, Fade; a vignette with midpoint, roundness, feather and highlight protection; grain with amount and size. |
|---|---|
| Detail | Sharpening and luminance and colour noise reduction done by the RAW decoder itself, starting from each camera's defaults. Controls a decoder doesn't support are hidden. |
| Optics | Lens correction from the profile the RAW carries; manual chromatic aberration (red and blue); purple and green defringe. |
Crop and geometry
Freeform and fixed aspect ratios (1:1, 3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 7:5, 16:9, 65:24 and the original), a straighten dial with Auto straighten from the horizon, quarter turns, flip, and vertical and horizontal perspective correction.

Masks
| Found by AI, on device | Subject, Sky, Background, People, a single person, a face, an object. Apple's Vision framework, on your device; the analysis is cached so masks are instant the second time. |
|---|---|
| Drawn | Brush (with Apple Pencil on iPad), linear gradient, radial gradient. |
| By range | Colour range and luminance range. |
| Combine | Add, subtract and intersect any of the above; invert; set the mask's amount. |
| Per-mask edits | Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Temperature, Tint, Vibrance, Saturation, Texture, Clarity, Dehaze, a curve, sharpening and noise reduction. |
| ProRAW | The iPhone's own sky matte, stored in the ProRAW file. |
There is no generative fill or generative remove. Masks select pixels you captured; they never invent new ones.
Remove, presets and versions
- Heal and clone, brushed onto the photo.
- Presets: built-in looks and your own, saved from any photo. Apply a whole preset or only the groups you choose (light, colour, effects, detail, masks, crop and more).
- Copy and paste settings with a group picker, across one photo or a whole selection.
- History of every step, snapshots you name, and virtual copies that share one RAW.
Library and culling
- Import from Files and Finder (referenced in place on the Mac, managed in the app on iPhone and iPad, visible in Files), the Photos library including ProRAW, SD cards and cameras over USB, drag and drop, and "Open in". When an import finishes, put the photos in an album, rename, caption and keyword them, and lay a preset over them in one step.
- Organise with ratings 0–5, Pick and Reject flags, colour labels, keywords, captions, albums and smart albums.
- Find by name, keyword, camera, lens, caption, date, ISO, file type and more; browse by camera and lens from the sidebar.
- Cull with keyboard shortcuts, Compare (two up, zoomed together), Survey, and Fast Cull on iPhone.
- Culling hints: focus, faces with closed eyes and near-duplicate groups, measured on device and shown as suggestions.
- Rename with templates: name, album, date, sequence, camera and lens.
iCloud sync
Sync uses CloudKit in your private iCloud database: your quota, your Apple Account, no Raw Smith server. Photos, edits, snapshots, albums, smart albums, keywords and presets all sync.
- Previews first: a photo appears on your other devices as soon as its preview arrives, ready to rate, edit and export at preview size.
- Originals on demand: the RAW downloads when you open it at 100%, export at full size, or always if you choose (per device).
- Background upload that resumes across launches.
- Field-level merges; when two devices change the same edit, the other version is saved as a snapshot, so nothing is silently lost.
- Settings shows how much iCloud space originals and previews use, and can remove downloaded originals from a device.
Mac, iPad and iPhone
Mac: a native three-pane app with sidebar, grid or loupe, and an inspector with a tool rail. Speed Edit (hold E, C, H, S, W, B, T, V or A and scroll), Lightroom-style shortcuts, every action in the menus, and a secondary display window.
iPad: the same structure with full keyboard and trackpad support, Speed Edit, and Apple Pencil for brushes and healing.
iPhone: a photo grid you pinch to resize, Fast Cull, and an editor with the photo on top and tools below; everything else fades while you drag a slider.

HDR and export
| HDR | HDR view on XDR and HDR displays; HDR export with an ISO 21496-1 gain map in HEIC or JPEG. |
|---|---|
| Formats | JPEG, 10-bit HEIC, 16-bit TIFF, PNG. |
| Size | Long edge, short edge, megapixels or percent; output sharpening for screen or print. |
| Colour space | sRGB, Display P3, Adobe RGB. |
| Metadata | All, copyright only or none; strip location; copyright and keywords written to the file. |
| Workflow | Batch export, saved export presets, rename templates, text watermark; to Photos, a folder, or the share sheet. XMP sidecars with ratings, labels and keywords. |
Agents, Shortcuts and Siri
On the Mac, Raw Smith includes an MCP server for AI assistants. It's off until you turn it on in Settings › Agents, and you choose what agents may do: view only (the default), view and edit, add export, or add delete. An agent connects through a small helper inside the app over a local socket; there's no network server and no port.
Agents can search the library, read photo details, render previews, apply profiles, presets, edits and masks, rate, flag, label, keyword and file photos into albums, analyse focus and exposure for culling, and export into a folder you choose. Each change goes through the same code as the app, shows live, and can be undone. Previews an agent looks at are sent to that assistant's AI provider under its terms.
On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Shortcuts and Siri can find photos, apply profiles and presets, rate, label, keyword, add to albums, rename and export. Photos are indexed in Spotlight.
Not in version 1
To be straightforward about scope: version 1 has no tethered shooting, no face recognition (naming people), no generative fill or remove, and no Windows version. Other apps' develop settings don't import, though ratings, labels and keywords travel in XMP sidecars.
