Presets: save a look and use it again

Updated · 3 min read

A preset in Raw Smith is a saved set of edits you can apply with one tap. Open the Presets tab in the editor to use the six built-in looks, or choose Save Preset… to keep the photo's current edits, or just some of them, for later.

Where to find presets

Presets is the last tab in the editor: in the tab bar under the photo on iPhone, and in the tool rail on iPad and Mac. With a keyboard, press ⌘5.

Tap a preset to apply it. It applies on top of the photo's edits as one step, so Undo takes it back.

The built-in presets

PunchyMore contrast and color.
Soft MatteLifted blacks, gentle color.
Clean MonochromeBlack and white with bite.
Warm GrainWarm light, fine grain.
Cool EveningBlue hour tones.
Crisp DetailSharpening with light noise reduction.

They sit under Built In at the top of the panel. Each is a starting point: apply it, then adjust the sliders to suit the photo.

How to save your own preset

  1. Edit a photo until you like it.
  2. In the Presets tab, choose Save Preset….
  3. Enter a Name, and a Group to file it under. The group starts as My Presets.
  4. Under Includes, turn on the parts of the edit the preset should carry, then save.

What a preset can include

ProfileStandard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome or Apple.
LightThe Light sliders and the luminance tone curve.
ColorWhite balance, vibrance, saturation, the Color Mixer, Color Grading and the red, green and blue curves.
EffectsClarity, dehaze, fade, vignette and grain.
DetailSharpening, noise reduction and lens corrections.
Subject, Sky and People MasksMasks found in the photo. They're found again in each photo you apply the preset to.
Brushed and Gradient MasksMasks you painted or drew, in the same place on the frame.
RemoveHeal and Clone spots, handy for sensor dust.
CropThe crop and straightening.

Profile through the found masks are on by default; drawn masks, Remove and Crop are off. Only the parts you choose are applied, so a preset of white balance and tone leaves a photo's crop and masks alone.

How to update, group or delete a preset

Your presets appear under their group names below the built-in ones. Each row lists the parts it includes. Press and hold (or right-click) a preset for:

  • Update with This Photo's Edits: replace the preset with the open photo's edits.
  • Delete: remove the preset. Photos it was applied to keep their edits.

With iCloud sync on, presets sync between your iPhone, iPad and Mac. See iCloud sync.

How to apply a preset to many photos

There are three ways to put a preset on more than one photo:

  • When you import. The sheet after an import has a preset picker under Keywords and Preset. Pick one and it goes on every photo you just brought in. If the sheet is off, turn on Offer an album and names after importing in Settings › Editor.
  • From one photo to the rest. Apply the preset to one photo, then copy its edits: select the photos in the grid and choose Copy Edits from “name” to the Others from the selection bar's More menu, or use Copy Settings… and Paste Settings to bring over only some groups.
  • With Shortcuts. The Apply Preset action takes photos from Find Photos, so you can build a shortcut such as "apply Warm Grain to every 4-star photo". See Shortcuts, Siri and agents.

Presets or Copy Settings?

Use Copy Settings… (⇧⌘C) to match photos from the same shoot right now. Save a preset when it's a look you'll want again on another day. Both let you choose which groups go across.

Questions

How do I create a preset in Raw Smith?

Edit a photo the way you like it, open the Presets tab and choose Save Preset…. Name it, pick a group, and choose which parts of the edit it includes.

Will a preset change my crop?

Only if you include Crop when you save it. A preset applies just the parts you ticked, so a white balance and tone preset leaves a photo's crop and masks alone.

Can presets include AI masks?

Yes. Turn on Subject, Sky and People Masks when you save. Those masks are found again in each photo the preset is applied to.

Do my presets sync between iPhone, iPad and Mac?

Yes, with iCloud sync on, your presets sync along with your photos and edits.

How do I apply a preset to many photos at once?

Choose it in the sheet that appears after importing, use the Apply Preset action in Shortcuts, or apply it to one photo and copy the settings to the others.

Try it on your own RAWs.
